ALGERIA Appeal from United States endorsed by representatives of the labour and democratic movement

Dear friends and comrades

The repression in Algeria against activists from all political backgrounds is being stepped up, while at the same time the movement of millions of Algerians to get rid of the regime is continuing and gaining momentum.

On 28 May, we received the news of the tragic death of democratic rights activist Dr Kameleddine Fekhar, whom the Algerian authorities left to die in prison after more than fifty days of hunger strike. In Algeria, more and more initiatives are being taken for the release of all those who have been detained for their opinions.

We have just received from the United States the appeal which you will find below. It was widely endorsed by representatives of the labour and democratic movement. We fully share the content of this appeal, and we invite you to circulate it as widely as possible, to endorse it, and to take any initiative in a form that you think useful to support the demand to release all those who have been detained for their political opinions. Please address these initiatives to the Algerian authorities, and let us know the details as well as the outcome.
