FRANCE Internationalist Rally in Strasbourg, May 11 2019 Down with the antidemocratic institutions of the European Union! A call from the National Steering Committee of the POID (Independent and Democratic Workers Party)

2019-04-21

To Working people, young people and activists of all political horizons in the labour movement  We are calling on you to gather in Strasbourg next May 11, at a grand internationalist rally (1). The so-called European Parliament meets in Strasbourg, a parliament that is in reality but a decoration to disguise the anti- democratic, anti-labour, anti-social measures of the European Union institutions.  On the 11th of May in Strasbourg we will say “This Europe is not our Europe!” – It is the Europe that privatises, the Europe that deregulates, the Europe that orders austerity plans on all the peoples of the continent.  Yes, that is a fact that the workers and the young people in France confirm daily: all of the government’s counter- reforms: Blanquer (education); Buzyn (hospitals); retirement pensions; SNCF (French railways) and all the cuts in the public budgets that lead to privatisations and the destruction of public services, all of this results from the [...]

MOROCCO Long live the Algerian revolution! Up with the fight for the Maghreb federation of sovereign and free nations, free from oppression and exploitation! A declaration of the editorial board of the Tribune des Travailleurs (Workers Tribune – Morocco)

2019-04-21

The people and workers of Morocco have followed your revolutionary mobilisation with particular attention and enthusiasm. You have mobilised to build a democratic Algeria and a Constituent Assembly that will institute the sovereignty of our brother people of Algeria.  The fates of our sister peoples have been bound together for centuries upon centuries for historical and geographical reasons.  Yesterday, fighting colonialism was the force binding our two sister peoples together; the peoples of Algeria and of Morocco and also the people of Tunisia in their heroic combat to wrench national independence and the sovereignty of the Greater Maghreb, especially under the auspices of the North African Star, the organisation that regrouped migrant workers from the three countries to lead a courageous fight for national independence.  True, and in different ways, our Maghreb countries have failed to reach genuine independence. The independence did not result in genuine, sovereign [...]

ALGERIA Declaration of the Organising Committee of the Internationalist Socialists (COSI) After Bouteflika’s Resignation: « Down with the Regime! Let the People Speak! Sovereign Constituent Assembly! Let’s Get Organized! »

2019-04-11

Abdelaziz Bouteflika is no longer president of the Republic as of Tuesday, April 2, 2019. This is the first victory of the entire people since they erupted onto the streets of the country’s cities and municipalities on February 22 to oppose « a fifth term » of the incumbent president.  It’s a first victory only because all the demands of the masses expressed over the past six weeks have not been met with the final exit of the outgoing president: The people have demanded, and continue to demand, « Down with the System Let the People Speak! »  But it is still victory for the people that was wrested with the mass marches, demonstrations, rallies, strikes, and the struggle for the independence of trade union organizations, especially the historic trade union confederation of workers: the UGTA. The people, especially the workers, have shown « that everything is possible! » This initial victory will undoubtedly strengthen the people’s resolve to [...]

For workers’ democracy and free discussion in the labour movement, against falsifications

2019-03-29

The international labour movement can live and achieve its tasks only if it recognises the legitimacy of free discussion, workers’ democracy, and the right of all activists, currents and organisations within its framework to freely defend their point of view. The International Workers’ Committee Against War and Exploitation, For the Workers’ International (IWC), which was formed in November 2016 by the Mumbai World Conference in India, is based on these principles. And that is why the IWC considers it its duty to alert working class activists all over the world – in this issue of its weekly Newsletter – about the campaign of falsification being perpetrated by someone called Benoît Lahouze, who is attacking one of the two coordinators of the IWC. So that everyone can form their own opinion, our Newsletter publishes below: (a) Excerpts of the email sent by Benoît Lahouze (1) to dozens of activists in Great Britain attacking comrade Daniel Gluckstein, editor of the French [...]

CHINA Document Non-stop repression against Chinese labour activists since 2015

2019-03-28

The International Workers Committee has been informed of a document being circulated by the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU), informing the international labour movement that “since 2015, the labour movement in China has entered a harsh winter. After a series of crackdowns, it is evident that the Chinese government’s suppression of the labour movement is increasingly relentless. This article summarizes the suppressions on labour struggles since December 2015 for a better understanding of the situation on China’s labour movement in recent years.” The HKCTU is calling for a week of mobilisation from 25 to 30 March. Labour rights activists criminally detained in 2015 On 3 December, 2015, the Guangdong Provincial Government criminally detained a total of more than 25 labour rights activists. Many NGOs staff members were affected. In the incident, Meng Han, Zhu Xiaomei, Tang Huanxing and Zeng Feiyang were charged with “gathering a crowd to disturb social order”, [...]

BRAZIL Against the « Reform » of Retirement Pensions

2019-03-18

In Curitiba, the call from the CUT (Central Unica dos Trabalhodores the Unified Workers’ Central) to form committees of resistance against the « reform » of retirement pensions has been taken seriously.  The far-right Bolsonaro government has announced publicly its plan for the counter-reform of the “Previdencia” (retirement pensions and healthcare). In Curitiba (in the state of Paraná), activists representing the Workers Party (PT), the Movement of Landless Peasants (MST), and unions — including a former federal MP from the PT — gathered on February 22 and decided, as our correspondent reports below, to create a Committee Against the Reform of the Previdencia.  The “United Plenary Assembly to Defeat the Reform of Retirement Pensions” was called following several earlier initiatives that had opened the perspective for united class struggle against Bolsonaro (a motion by the PT committee of North Curitiba for a general strike, a petition supporting the strike [...]

ALGERIA March 10 : The working class enters the scene

2019-03-18

Our correspondents in Algeria report on a new, eventful week — from March 6 to 10 — in the revolutionary process that began in Algeria on February 22.  Algiers, March 10, 2019 Wednesday, March 6. While the higher-up officials of the regime seem not to want to back down, there are increasing calls to demonstrate on Friday, March 8, with explicit reference to International Women’s Day. But this time, important organised sectors of society are calling to mobilise, as is the case, for example of the National Organisation of Mujahideen (which brings together former combatants of the Algerian Revolution). Reacting to the statements of the Trump administration, which the day before claimed to « support the peaceful demonstrations », the students in Algiers came up with a new slogan, in Arabic: « Trump, leave us alone! This is a family affair that can be settled within the family! »  In the organised sectors of the working class, mobilisations are continuing in the [...]
