World Conference Against War and Exploitation, for a Workers’ International Paris (France), 5 and 6 November, 20
Every day that goes by, humankind is being dragged further towards barbarism. This has become clear to workers and activists all around the world.
Wars are spreading. Afghanistan under occupation for 18 years; syrian population facing untold misery and migration for eight years, massacres in Yemen; Kashmir cut off from the world for over 70 days; military threats against Iran; strategic military encirclement of China; manufactured conflicts in Africa; permanently increasing military budgets: capitalism means war.
Tens of millions of men, women and children are being thrown onto the roads to exile. Tens of thousands of people drowned in the Mediterranean; Rohingyas driven from their land; women, men and children stopped at the border between Mexico and the United States. Humankind has never known such a mass-scale forced displacement of whole populations.
Labour gains are being systematically attacked and dismantled. Pension and social welfare systems are being put into question; mass unemployment is growing in every country; employment legalization is being targeted for counter-reform everywhere. added to this has been the ill effects of the ongoing trade war and sanctions causing price rise.
The future of the younger generation is being sacrificed through insecure employment, attacks on the right to study, and the growth of the drugs economy. Wealth has been accumulated in the hands of very few and millions go hungry despite plentitude of food production.
The environment is under threat. The huge fires in the Amazon that were deliberately started in order to help the multinationals is a forceful reminder: capitalism only knows the law of profit, regardless of the consequences.
The root cause of this situation is to be found in the survival of the capitalist system, the system of exploitation based on the system of private ownership of the means of production.
However, there is nothing inevitable about barbarism prevailing: the resources for achieving a positive outcome for humankind exist on the side of the labour movement.
The working class is fighting back. Just like the workers of mainland China, the Chinese workers of Hong Kong are using strikes and demonstrations to fight for the right to organise independently. We have lost count of the mass general strikes that have seen tens of millions of workers stand up for their rights; revolutionary movements – like the one in Algeria today – are strongly posing the question of putting an end to the regime.
It falls to the labour movement to open up a perspective for peace, progress and a future.
The working class has no interest whatsoever in these unjust wars. When the US, French, British and other imperialist governments intervene militarily in the Middle East, in Africa and in Asia, it is always to protect their domination, it is always for the benefit of the exploiters, of the multinationals. Those same governments are waging a social war against the working class and the youth in their own countries.
– By taking action against war, so that workers are in the factory and not involved in murderous conflicts, the labour movement is a factor of peace;
– By fighting for its right to exist, to ensure that the workers can freely organise in trade unions and political parties, and can set up the fighting bodies that are needed for a united and effective struggle in forms which they themselves will choose, the labour movement is defending democracy;
– By fighting against the grip of the multinationals and against the external debt that is strangling the peoples, the labour movement is taking the lead in the struggle for the right to national sovereignty;
– By fighting in defence of the working class’s collective rights and in defence of the social welfare systems, the labour movement is defending the right to work, which produces all wealth;
– By fighting to put an end to the capitalist system and for socialism, the labour movement gives hope and a future to humankind.
There is no shortage of struggles around the world…
Of course, the workers are well aware of the difficulties they are facing.
Governments around the world – whether of the right or the left – are attacking the trade union organisations by either repressing them or by trying to co-opt them. They are putting into question the right to strike and the right to demonstrate.
The difficulties facing the labour movement are also due to the fact that instead of carrying out their mandate in a united struggle against the capitalists, officials of the labour organisations are embracing the process of integration into the State, and also due to the fact that some of those officials consider the market economy to be an “unsurpassable horizon”.
More recently, some currents have even been calling for the abandoning of all forms of organising the working class (trade unions and political parties) and to dissolve those forms into informal movements.
But we all know that in order to participate in the struggles in our countries, the workers and activists are taking action in the very course of their class struggle to defend the organisations which they have built and to build new ones, in order to be able to organise themselves in forms which they decide upon freely.
…and they call for the independence of the labour movement
In November 2016, 350 delegates from 28 countries, trade unionists and political activists of all schools of thought and all currents of the labour movement, constituted in Mumbai (India) the International Workers Committee Against War and Exploitation, for a Workers’ International around a manifesto which notably affirmed that “the class struggle remains the driving force of history. We affirm that the progress of human civilization, of peace and democracy, depends first and foremost on the ability of the exploited and the oppressed throughout the world to preserve the independence of their organisations.”
More than ever, this remains true.
More than ever, the future lies on the side of the labour movement fighting – on behalf of all the oppressed – for its emancipation, fighting to put an end to the system of exploitation and poverty.
Workers and trade unions of the world must have one voice against war and exploitation.
We, the undersigned labour activists from different traditions, propose that an International Conference Against War and Exploitation, For a Workers’ International be held Paris (France), 5 and 6 November, 2020
By coming together, with our diverse points of view, around the simple principles which gave rise to the labour movement, we adopt as our own the words of The Internationale: “The Internationale unites the human race”.
